Becoming the woman you were meant to be
A Great Opportunity for Women Writers!
The Story Circle Network is dedicated to helping women share the stories of their lives and to raising public awareness of the importance of women’s personal histories. They carry out their mission through publications, a web site, classes, workshops, writing and reading circles and woman-focused programs. Their activities empower women to tell their stories, discover their identities through their stories, and choose to be the authors of their own lives.
Whether you are new to writing, have always wanted to write, or are a seasoned writer who’d like to connect with other women writers, Story Circle Network is the creative, empowering and supportive organization for you. Membership is reasonably priced and there are opportunities for your work to be published in the Story Circle quarterly journal and annual anthology. To join or for more information go to

We all have struggles in our lives: A difficult child, rocky events in our marriages, struggles with our aging parents, etc. If we’ve survived until middle-age, we likely have found ways to cope with these situations. Often, it is what we tell ourselves helps us get through. We make use of sayings or affirmations.
This month I’m sharing two affirmations that help me get through tough times. I ask you to submit your affirmations and how and why they work for you. When you submit, “Affirmations” should appear on the subject line.
My Affirmations:
There are two affirmations I live by. First: “Just when the caterpillar thought it was over, it became a butterfly.” It is engraved on a pendant I have not taken off since my mother passed away several years ago. My Mother was someone who gave up easily. Her favorite word always seemed to be “can’t”. This mindset caused her, as well as my father, to miss out on many opportunities. After her death, I began to realize how often I had responded in a similar manner when confronted by a challenge. Just days after her passing, I found the butterfly pendant. Now, when I’m frustrated or fearful about taking on a task or completing it, I just look down at the pendant.
The second affirmation is “Not My Circus, Not my Monkeys.” This is a relatively new affirmation. For most of my life I allowed myself to become too involved in situations over which I had no control. Family disputes or someone’s negative attitude would suck me in. I’ve reached a point in my life where this fruitless involvement takes too much energy. Energy that I can use to enrich my own life.
I frequently have conversations with my sister. Issues we have with our grown children always arise. We talk and talk and talk about them until one of us says: “Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys.” We’re thinking of having a plaque with those words engraved on it and placed above our bathroom mirrors.
